Sofi Scandinavian bakery in Berlin mitte

Sofi Bakery

No Loafing Around..

Are you a bread junkie? The kind who measures happiness in the flavour and texture of sourdough, and who believes baking should be made compulsory in state schools? Then you owe yourself a trip to SOFI. This rustic bakery is difficult to find at first  — it’s tucked away in a beautiful interconnected nineteenth century brickwork courtyard, Sophie-Gips Höfe, boasting some of the city’s most eyepleasing architecture. But Instagrammers are used to going the extra mile to find the best places, and the discerning bread lovers among them have long unearthed the doughy treasures on sale here. Interestingly, SOFI is not a German bakery, but the offshoot of a Copenhagen venture famous for their low-intervention levain-fermented breads made from ancient grains like Emmer and Waldstaude rye. So the flour from their signature “Berlin Loaf” (€8.20) actually comes from a small organic mill in Denmark. The result – an addictively chewy interior under the perfect crust — a far cry from the “fresh oven-baked” breads sold at most Berlin bakeries. Come early and treat yourself to a thick slice of the Berlin loaf with Bergkäse or just whipped butter (€2-6); add a cup of filter coffee from local roaster POPULUS and enjoy the peace of morning as the sunlight hits the inner courtyard, and the smell of warm sourdough lingers rich. Queues start forming around 10 — so come before, or order online. On weekends bread sells out by midday, but you may still score one of their deliciously buttery-flaky “traditional croissants” or “pain au chocolat”.

SOFI Sophienstraße 21, Mitte, Mon-Fri 07.30-18.30, Sat-Sun 08.30-17.30 (€1-10)
