Write your passage…
Our journalism project
We run monthly programmes throughout the summer in Berlin. The centrepiece is the creative journalism project. You’ll get together with an international group to write, edit and design a travel based magazine to the city. We oversee all the steps and provide feedback along the way, and the course culminates in the publication of the magazine, with its own unique ISBN number.
As well as having a brilliant piece for your writing portfolio, you’ll be able to network with like-minded people and cite your work on your CV.
We have two sessions each month with a career journalist, who will share their experiences in the profession and go on to give feedback to the project members.
Being tasked with making a travel guide also gives you great motivation to truly explore a city, and Berlin is a real treasure chest of intriguing places. It is steeped in history and artistic flair , and offers one of the world’s most celebrated nightlifes. The city is also full of outdoor opportunities in summer, with over 80 lakes, loads of parks, street parties and festivals.
Our graffiti workshops
Berlin is renowned for its street art movement, and we want to give our writing team a chance to learn about, and practise, this beautiful craft.
We’ve teamed up with two celebrated street artists to bring you ‘Street Art Malanders’ – recycling in context. In this workshop you’ll get some background on what it means to be part of this movement in modern Berlin. You’ll then learn the basics of stenciling, tagging and spray painting. Under the tutelage of our artists you’ll create a piece of art to take home with you.
These workshops are truly authentic- they take place in a formerly abandoned apartment in West Berlin. They are hosted by Ale Senso and her colleague Stefano, two very friendly, passionate Berlin artists.
The German classes
A project that aims to give its members an insider’s perspective wouldn’t be complete without a local language class.
We are partnered with ‘Feinsprecher‘ – learning with head, hands and belly..
They teach German language at all levels, and they also take their students to local markets to practise speaking and pick ingredients for the end of the course, which is a cooking class!
Learning a language and local culture through the cuisine is a truly unique and interactive experience.
Let us know your level of German before you arrive so we can be sure to put you in the appropriate class!
They are based in the same location as our office space, so the writing project runs neatly beside the language course!
The German classes are an optional extra for our project – the full prices can be found towards the end of this document.
Where are we based?
We are based in Schoneberg in West Berlin. Our writing project and language classes take place at ‘Tuesday coworking‘.
There’s plenty of cafe’s and restaurants nearby, and we’re right by the town hall and John F Kennedy Platz, where he famously declared himself a Berliner.
Tours / excursions
We leave much of the exploring up to those on the project – giving them freedom to discover Berlin for themselves. We do, however, run two or three excursions during each monthly project.
These can range from historical / cultural tours to hikes or lake visits. This changes each month but there’ll be a trip to suit everyone and they make for a great team day out.
Most recently we went on a winter hike in Northern Berlin around Liepnitzsee lake, guided by Alexandra from Fresh Air Pink Cheeks. It was a fantastic day spent in the nature!
Our Company Ethos
Treetop travel Journalism was born out of the hope of providing aspiring writers the platform to express themselves creatively while exploring a new city.
In the last two years it has evolved into a more holistic project – the students now work as writers, photographers, editors and graphic designers to bring a travel magazine to life.
We’ve partnered with various local people and companies – all of whom are deeply passionate about what they do. Our language teachers, tour guides and street art instructors all do things a bit differently, the result of which is that no two projects are the same, and everyone on our course experiences something unique.
