Mauerpark Sundays

Mauerpark is a crazy place in the summer, especially on Sundays. Every week there is a festival atmosphere, featuring a flea market and food stalls; live music and dancing; barbecues and cheap beers. The market is a hugely popular and diverse place, where you can pick up jewellery, antiques, clothes, posters and Berlin memorabilia.

Perhaps what attracts the most visitors, though, is the Sunday afternoon ‘bear pit-karaoke’ at which hundreds of people sit in a Roman-style amphitheater to watch genuinely talented artists and brave amateurs take to the stage to belt out their tune of choice. Just  getting to listen to the Irish guy who runs the karaoke is worth the trip there on its own. This four hour long musical marathon has cemented itself as an institution in Berlin, and is a must for any visitors.

The party vibe lives long into the night here – with the heavy red sunsets and hedonistic merriment, it can often be a day you don’t want to end. The area surrounding the park is bustling with restaurants and bars. The crowd here is a complete mix of tourists and locals and people of all different ages. This is due to the fact that their is such a variety of activities taking place in the same park. I found German lessons, yoga, salsa, grafiti classes, drinking games and much more all going on within a few feet of eachother, which I think really provides the magic. The name ‘Mauerpark’ translates to ‘Wall park’ – the wall running through it was part of the Berlin wall and its death strip, meaning you can also visit a site of great historical importance.
