Books and Bagels: a Treetop Review

A review of Books and Bagels, a coffee shop / bagel house in Berlin’s district of Friedrichshain. By July project member Shanti.

With grand glass windows exposing its intricate collection of literature, it becomes impossible for any book worms to stroll by Books and Bagels without a curious peak at the very least. Although, once that happens, the deal is done as the smell of roasting coffee and fresh bagels simply cannot be refused. Reading, working, coffees and cake; this place is the perfect escape from the sometimes chaotic buzz of the Berlin streets.

Hours can be spent here at a time. The music sings sweetly and the staff smile generously. Whether coming in to cram work, or simply to socialise with like-minded people in a completely relaxed environment, a contagious calm fuses through the air. I opt for a warming home-made bagel, oozing with hummus and olive oil. Rest assured, if hummus does not appeal; avocado, goats cheese and olive tapenade are just some of the alternatives.

A good book in hand, I station myself outside. Alas, hours in; it’s treat o’clock. A kind soul parked next to me notices my hesitation, and as I glance inside, she offers kindly to keep an eye on my belongings. I return shortly, an extra cookie in hand; encouraged by the prospect of making a new friend in this endlessly exciting city.
